Nylon Moisture Treatment: Drying and Storage Guide
Ngày 22 tháng 4 năm 2026 | 7 phút đọc
Nylon is notoriously hygroscopic, absorbing moisture from the air like a sponge. This moisture causes printing defects ranging from poor surface finish to complete print failure. The following drying, storage, and handling techniques apply to both FDM filaments and injection molding feedstock.

Drying, Storage and Conditioning Are Different Steps
For procurement and process control, treat this as a nylon moisture treatment plan: remove moisture before processing, protect the dry material during transfer, and define the conditioning state used for inspection.
Nylon moisture control has three separate stages. Drying removes process moisture before the material is heated. Storage prevents the dried material from taking moisture back from the surrounding air. Conditioning changes the moisture state of a finished part after molding or printing and should be controlled as a separate engineering step. Treating these as one activity can produce unstable processing, changing dimensions and misleading test results.
The correct workflow depends on the material form. Pellets for injection molding, filament for additive manufacturing and molded parts do not share the same handling assumptions. Start with the exact grade, supplier drying guidance, package history, ambient humidity, dryer type, target process and the symptoms being investigated. A temperature and time copied from another nylon grade is not a reliable process specification.

Resin-Pellet Drying Workflow
For molding, confirm whether the package is factory sealed, partially used or exposed to ambient air. Load only the quantity that can be dried and transferred within the approved handling window. The dryer should provide stable temperature and sufficiently dry air; a nominal setpoint alone does not prove that the material reached the required moisture state. Record the grade, lot, start time, setpoint, actual air condition, end time and transfer route.
After drying, move the resin through a closed or protected path into the hopper. Avoid open trays, uncovered bins and long pauses beside the machine. If a hopper dryer is used, record residence time and confirm that material is not bypassing the intended heat and airflow. For a material change, clean the hopper and conveying line so wet residue or a different polymer does not contaminate the next lot.

Filament Drying and Sealed Storage
Filament needs the same discipline but a different workflow. A spool may have absorbed moisture before it was opened, and a dry box may protect it without removing moisture that is already inside the polymer. Drying time depends on filament diameter, polymer grade, spool size, dryer air movement and the starting condition. After drying, keep the spool in a controlled dry box or sealed package and limit the time it is exposed while loading the printer.
A test print can reveal improvement, but it is not a substitute for a moisture record when the part is safety-critical or dimensionally sensitive. Record nozzle, bed, chamber, material, drying history, storage condition and print orientation. For a narrow filament-specific workflow, use the nylon filament drying guide; this page keeps the molding, storage and cross-process decision together.
Dew Point, Verification and Reabsorption
Dew point describes the moisture condition of the drying air, while temperature and time describe the heat exposure. Both should be considered with airflow and material depth. A dryer that reports a low setpoint but has unstable dew point or poor air circulation may not deliver a repeatable result. Moisture analyzers, Karl Fischer testing or a validated supplier method can be used when the project requires a numerical limit. Use one method consistently and document its sample preparation.
Nylon can reabsorb moisture quickly after drying, especially in warm or humid conditions. The elapsed time between dryer, hopper and molding machine should be part of the process record. If a defect changes during a shift, compare material exposure time and storage condition before changing injection parameters. Surface splay, bubbles, silver streaks, poor layer bonding, reduced toughness and changing dimensions can have several causes, so confirm moisture alongside venting, melt temperature and contamination.
